TARR TO CHAIR REPUBLICAN POLICY
CONFERENCE
1/9/07
BOSTON-
State Senator Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) will begin the new
legislative session with two new roles. First, he has advanced
to the position of Assistant Minority leader, placing him second
only to Minority leader Richard R. Tisei of Wakefield in the
Senate Republican Caucus. Tarr has reached this position
following six years of service as Minority Whip and two years as
Assistant Minority Whip.
Tarr will also be
the Senate chair of the newly created Republican Policy
Conference. A body which never before existed in the
legislature, the policy conference will work to develop
legislation, policy proposals and other positions by developing
a consensus among House and Senate Republican legislators. Tarr
has been among the principal architects of the conference, which
has been formally appointed by Tisei and House Minority Leader
Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading).
“The policy
conference will ensure that the minority party will be a party
of ideas and not merely opposition,” said Tarr. He added that
“in an era where growing importance is being placed on the merit
of ideas rather than their party of origin, our caucus will be
poised to engage in collaborative and productive debate.”
Senate Minority
Leader Richard Tisei commented that, “The policy conference
provides an opportunity for the members of the minority party to
make their collective voices heard and to put forth ideas that
will help move the Commonwealth forward in a positive direction.
Having worked closely with Senator Tarr in the Legislature for
many years, I am confident he will do an outstanding job
articulating the goals and ideals of the Republican Party in his
new leadership role.”
Reflecting Tarr’s
proven ability to reach across partisan lines to achieve
results, Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Steven A.
Baddour (D-Methuen) said “Bruce’s chairmanship is good news for
the North Shore, the Merrimack Valley and the Senate. He’s
consistently demonstrated the ability to pull people together,
reach across party lines and get things done.”
The Republican
Policy Conference will maximize the use of every member’s
talents. Legislation from the Republican Policy Conference will
be filed on Wednesday, January 10th.
